Supplementary Week: Measuring to Cook

Measuring to Cook contains five lesson plans that emphasize using measuring tools to follow recipes.  Children become familiar with the concept and structure of a recipe as they practice using tools to measure ingredients.  They learn the names of various standard measures in cooking – cups, tablespoon, teaspoon and experience that these can be multiplied (add 2 cups of flour) or divided (add ½ cup of water).  They will talk about absolute size (a cup) and relative size (a tablespoon is bigger than a teaspoon; which container will hold more).  The daily suggestions for language and literacy consider differences between fiction and non-fiction.
